KeyRoutines vs PowerToys: utilities or routines on Windows 11?
PowerToys is a free, open-source collection of Windows utilities from Microsoft, including FancyZones for window zones, Keyboard Manager for remapping, PowerRename, Awake and Always On Top. Each tool does one job very well. KeyRoutines is different: it chains many actions into routines and starts them from triggers like a hotkey, an app starting or a device connecting. Most people who'd like both should simply use both.
| Topic | KeyRoutines | PowerToys |
|---|---|---|
| What it is | An automation app: routines made of triggers, steps and conditions. | A set of separate utilities that each improve one part of Windows. |
| Price | Free; optional one-time Pro upgrade ($29.99, 2 PCs). | Free and open source. |
| Windows | Apply layout and Restore layout put many windows on set monitors in one step, from any trigger. | FancyZones gives you custom snap zones to drag windows into, and can remember where apps go. |
| Keys | Hotkeys start routines; no always-on key remapping in 1.0. | Keyboard Manager remaps keys and shortcuts, globally or per app. |
| Renaming files | Rename file inside a routine, for example after a download or on a schedule. | PowerRename: an excellent one-off bulk renamer with a live preview. |
| Chaining actions | The core idea: open apps, wait until ready, switch audio, arrange windows, notify you, in one routine. | Each utility works on its own; there's no way to chain them into a sequence. |
| Triggers | Schedules, apps and games starting, devices, displays, Wi-Fi, power, lock and wake, files and more. | Mostly shortcuts you press, plus a few automatic behaviours inside each utility. |
| Audio and devices | Switch default audio devices, per-app volume and mute, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, brightness. | Not its focus. |
