Check which audio device is the Windows default in a routine

Audio device is the default is true when a chosen device is connected and Windows uses it as a default. It is the condition behind toggles that flip between headset and speakers with one key.

How it works

  • Pick the device and, if you want, the role: the regular default that the volume icon follows, multimedia, or the default communication device.
  • It only counts as true when the device is actually connected as well as set as the default.
  • Inside a Wait until it reacts to Windows' device change messages rather than checking on a timer.

Routines that use it

Headset or speakers toggle

On a Hotkey, if the headset is the default switch to the speakers with Set default audio device, else switch to the headset.

Fix calls before they start

When Mic or camera in use fires, check that your headset is the default communication device and switch it if not.

Status banner

Show banner with a different message depending on whether the speakers are the default, so you know where sound will go.

Questions

How do I check which sound output Windows is using?
Use Audio device is the default with the device you care about. It answers true or false, and you can branch your routine on the answer.
What is the communication device role?
Windows keeps a separate default for calls, which apps like Discord, Teams and Zoom follow when set to Default. Choose that role to check the call device instead of the main one.
