Check which monitor is the main display on Windows 11

Main monitor checks whether a chosen monitor is the one Windows treats as the main display, where the taskbar and new windows usually go. It's useful for setups that switch between a desk monitor and a TV or projector.

How it works

  • Pick the monitor by its name or saved id, never by Windows' number.
  • It is true only while that monitor is the main one; the reason names the monitor that is main instead.
  • With no monitor chosen it is false, and a fallback such as "the largest monitor" never counts.
  • In a Wait until it listens for display changes rather than checking on a timer.

Routines that use it

Gaming on the TV

When the TV is the main monitor, Set default audio device moves sound to it and Open app starts your game launcher.

Notice a swapped main display

After docking, an If shows a Show banner reminder when your desk monitor isn't the main one.

Work only on the right screen

Only run Apply layout "Work" when your work monitor is main, so windows don't land on a projector.

Good to know

  • It only checks which monitor is main. Changing the main monitor needs the Monitor layout feature, which isn't part of this block.

Questions

How do I check which monitor is primary on Windows 11?
In Windows, Settings shows it under System, Display. In a routine, use Main monitor to check it automatically and act on the answer.
Why do my windows open on the wrong monitor?
New windows usually open on the main monitor, which may have changed after docking. Main monitor lets a routine notice that, and Move and resize can put the window where you want it.
