Check if desktop icons are showing or hidden on Windows 11

Desktop icons are showing is a condition that answers whether the icons on your desktop are visible or hidden. It is useful when one routine should behave differently depending on how your desktop looks right now.

How it works

  • Choose whether you are checking for showing or for hidden.
  • It reads one quick value from the desktop, so asking costs almost nothing.
  • Nothing watches the desktop in the background; inside a Wait until it simply checks again from time to time, more slowly the longer it waits.

Routines that use it

Clean desktop toggle with a message

On a Hotkey, if icons are showing, hide them with Show or hide desktop icons and Show banner says the desktop is clean.

Screenshot only when tidy

Before Take screenshot of the whole monitor, check icons are hidden so private file names never end up in the picture.

Restore after presenting

When a presentation routine ends, check whether icons are still hidden and show them again if so.

Questions

Can a routine tell if my desktop icons are hidden?
Yes. Add Desktop icons are showing as a condition and choose hidden or showing. It reads the same setting as right-click ▸ View ▸ Show desktop icons.
Does checking slow down my PC?
No. It reads a single value when asked and nothing keeps running while the routine is idle.
