Arrange windows across multiple monitors on Windows 11

Apply layout puts several windows on their monitors in one step, and can open apps that aren't running yet. It's the step behind "one key and my whole workspace is set up".

How it works

  • Each placement names a window, a monitor and where on that monitor it goes, as a share of the screen so resolution and scaling changes don't break it; it can also be maximized, minimized or kept on top.
  • When a window isn't open you choose to skip it, open its app and wait for it, just wait for something else to open it, or fail the step; it waits 30 seconds by default.
  • Monitors are found by their saved identity, then the same monitor on another port, the same model or its name, and finally a fallback such as "the largest"; the log says which rule matched.
  • Windows are placed without being brought to the front, so a game keeps focus, and a window that jumps after its splash screen is placed again.
  • One placement failing doesn't stop the others; the step reports which ones failed at the end.

Routines that use it

Stream setup

A hotkey runs Apply layout: Discord on the left half of monitor 2, OBS top right and chat bottom right, opening any that are missing.

Dock and go

When Display changed sees your desk monitor connect, Apply layout "Work" puts your editor, browser and Slack back.

Meeting mode

Before a call, Apply layout puts the meeting app on the main monitor and your notes on the right, then Quiet mode turns on.

Good to know

  • A protected game's windows are never moved.
  • While a full-screen app is in front, missing apps are opened minimized and placed after they appear, which only works for apps that respect it.

Questions

How do I save and restore a multi-monitor window layout on Windows 11?
Capture your current windows into an Apply layout step, or save them in the Layouts library and use Restore layout. Run it from a hotkey or when you dock.
Will arranging windows steal focus from my game?
No. Apply layout moves windows without bringing them to the front, and it never moves a protected game's own windows.
