How to switch to your headset automatically when it connects

In KeyRoutines, use the Audio device changed trigger set to fire when your headset connects, then add Set default audio device for sound and for the microphone and a Set volume step. The free Headset Connected template does exactly this and only needs you to pick your headset.

Steps

  1. 1

    Start from the template

Open the Headset Connected template, or create a routine with the Audio device changed trigger set to fire when a device connects.

  2. 2

    Pick your headset

Choose the headset in the trigger so the routine ignores other devices such as a monitor's speakers.

  3. 3

    Switch sound and calls

Add Set default audio device with the device that connected, so sound and calls move to the headset.

  4. 4

    Switch the microphone

Add a second Set default audio device step for the headset's microphone, if it has one.

  5. 5

    Set the volume

Add Set volume on the master output, for example 35 %, so a headset never starts at full speaker volume, then a Show banner step to confirm.

Tips

  • Works for USB and Bluetooth headsets alike, because the trigger watches Windows' audio devices rather than the port.
  • Pair it with a second routine for when the headset disconnects, so sound goes back to your speakers.

Questions

Does Windows not do this already?
Windows sometimes switches to a new device and sometimes doesn't, and it never sets the volume or the microphone for you. A routine makes it the same every time.
Will it fire when the headset is already connected at startup?
No. The trigger fires when the device connects, not for devices that were already there.
