How to mute your microphone with a hotkey on Windows 11
Make a KeyRoutines routine with a Hotkey trigger and a Mute or unmute step that targets the microphone and switches between muted and unmuted. Then an If with Compare values reads the step's result and a Show banner step says "Mic muted" or "Mic live".
Steps
- 1
Add a Hotkey trigger
Choose a key you can reach quickly, such as Pause or Ctrl+Alt+M.
- 2
Toggle the microphone
Add Mute or unmute, set the target to the microphone and the action to switch between the two.
- 3
Check the result
Add an If with Compare values that checks the Mute or unmute step's muted output.
- 4
Show the state
Put a Show banner step in each branch: "Mic muted" with the needs-attention tone, and "Mic live" in the other.
Tips
- This mutes the device in Windows, so every app hears silence, including ones without their own mute key.
- Apps that show their own mute button won't show it changing, because the mute happens one level below them.
Questions
- Does it work during a game?
- The hotkey still works while a game is in front. KeyRoutines changes the Windows microphone setting and sends nothing to the game.
- Can I make it push-to-talk instead?
- A Hotkey trigger can fire on press, release or hold, so you can build one routine that unmutes on press and another that mutes on release.
