How to lower music volume automatically during calls
In KeyRoutines, add the Mic or camera in use trigger twice, once for started and once for stopped. Started by trigger picks the branch: App volume turns your music app down when a call starts and back up when the microphone is released.
Steps
- 1
Watch the microphone
Add the Mic or camera in use trigger set to the microphone and started. Add a second one set to stopped.
- 2
Only act if music is open
Add an If with App is running for your music app, such as Spotify, so the routine does nothing otherwise.
- 3
Turn the music down
Inside it, add another If with Started by trigger set to the started trigger, and an App volume step that sets the music app to 0.1.
- 4
Bring it back
In the Else branch, add App volume that sets the music app back to your usual level, for example 0.6.
Tips
- Mic or camera in use is marked Experimental in KeyRoutines: it reads Windows' own "in use" information, which some apps report later than others.
- Limit the trigger to one app, such as Zoom or Teams, if voice chat in other apps shouldn't duck the music.
Questions
- Why not use Windows' communications ducking?
- Windows' built-in option only works with apps that open a communications stream, and it lowers every other app. This routine lowers just the app you pick.
- Can it pause the music instead?
- Yes. Use Media control with Pause and Play instead of App volume.
