Check if a window is open before a Windows 11 routine runs

Window exists is true while a window that matches your description is open. Use it to wait for a dialog, a specific document or a browser window before a routine carries on.

How it works

  • Describe the window by its app, program, title or class, or use a specific window from an earlier step to check it is still open.
  • Hidden and cloaked windows don't count by default, and fields you fill in must all match.
  • In a Wait until it listens for windows opening, closing, being renamed, shown, hidden, minimized or restored, with no polling.
  • The window it found and how many matched are passed to later steps; the reason says how many windows matched, or that none did.

Routines that use it

Wait for a dialog

After clicking Export, Wait until a window titled "Export complete" exists, then Press keys hits Enter to close it.

Only when a document is open

A hotkey routine checks that a window with "Budget" in its title exists before Focus window brings it forward.

Close when done

Wait until the installer's window no longer exists, then Show banner tells you setup has finished.

Questions

How do I make a routine wait for a window to appear?
Use Wait until with Window exists and describe the window by its app or title. It moves on as soon as the window appears, or times out if it never does.
Can I match a window by part of its title?
Yes. The title can be matched exactly or by text it contains, and you can combine it with the app so other programs' windows don't count.
