Check if dark mode is on in Windows 11 from a routine

Dark mode is on is a condition that tells a routine whether apps, or Windows' own taskbar and Start, are using dark or light mode. Use it to keep other things, such as your wallpaper, in step with the theme.

How it works

  • Choose dark or light, and whether you mean apps' theme or Windows' theme.
  • Apps and Windows can be set separately, so you can check each one on its own.
  • It reads one setting when asked; a Wait until on it re-checks at a slow, growing interval rather than watching all the time.

Routines that use it

Matching wallpaper

After a theme toggle, if dark mode is on use Set wallpaper with a dark picture, otherwise a light one.

Evening check

At a time at 19:00 checks whether apps are still in light mode and, if so, switches them with Dark or light mode.

Stream lighting

If Windows is in dark mode, Set Elgato light uses a warmer, dimmer setting to match the darker screen.

Questions

How can a routine know if Windows is in dark mode?
Use Dark mode is on and pick apps or Windows. It is true when that part of Windows uses the theme you chose.
What is the difference between the apps theme and the Windows theme?
Windows 11 keeps two settings: one for apps and one for the taskbar, Start and notifications. This condition can check either one.
