Check whether an earlier step in your routine worked

Step succeeded looks back at a step earlier in the same routine and tells you if it worked. It's most useful after a step that's allowed to fail, so you can try a backup plan instead of stopping.

How it works

  • Pick an earlier step from the list.
  • It's true when that step succeeded, and false when it failed or hasn't run yet.
  • The run history says which, for example "open_obs failed" or "open_obs hasn't run".
  • Pair it with a step whose error setting is "continue", so the routine keeps going after a failure and can check here.

Routines that use it

Fallback app

Let Open app for your usual editor continue on error, then open a second editor if Step succeeded says the first one failed.

Only notify on success

After Download file, show a banner only when the download step worked.

Retry a webhook

If Send webhook didn't succeed, wait with Delay and send it once more.

Good to know

  • It can only look at steps that come earlier in the same routine.

Questions

How do I keep a routine going when one step fails?
Set that step's error handling to continue, then check it later with Step succeeded and run a fallback if it failed.
What does Step succeeded say about a step that was skipped?
It answers false and the history notes that the step hasn't run.
