Change your Discord microphone automatically on Windows

Discord: input device sets which microphone Discord uses. It needs KeyRoutines Pro and is the only way a routine can move Discord to a specific mic, because Discord has no keybind for its devices.

KeyRoutines Pro is a one-time $29.99 upgrade for up to 2 PCs.

How it works

  • Type the device as Windows or Discord names it, a part of the name, Discord's own device ID, or Default to follow Windows again.
  • If the name matches more than one device, or none, the step fails and lists the microphones Discord has.
  • Windows and Discord name devices the same way, so the device name from the Audio device changed trigger can be passed straight in.
  • If Discord already uses that microphone, nothing changes; the outputs include the device it used before.

Routines that use it

Headset connected

When Audio device changed reports your headset connecting, set Discord's input to the headset microphone using the trigger's device name.

Studio mic for streams

Before going live with OBS: record / stream / replay, switch Discord to your USB studio microphone.

Back to Default

When the headset disconnects, set Discord's input to Default so it follows whatever Windows uses.

Good to know

  • The microphone must appear in Discord's own device list; Discord has to be running and linked to KeyRoutines.

Questions

How do I make Discord switch microphones when I plug in my headset?
Use Audio device changed for the headset and add Discord: input device with the headset mic's name. Without Pro, you can instead leave Discord on Default and switch Windows' default device with Set default audio device.
What does Default mean here?
Default makes Discord follow Windows' default communications microphone. Pick it when you want Windows, rather than Discord, to decide.
