How it works
- Name the device as Windows or Discord shows it, a few words from that name, Discord's own device ID, or Default to follow Windows again.
- An exact name wins over a partial one; if the words match several speakers or none, the step stops and lists the output devices Discord knows about.
- If Discord is already playing through that device, nothing is changed.
- The step outputs the device it switched to and the one Discord used before, so you can switch back later.
- Because Windows and Discord give devices the same names, the name from an Audio device changed trigger works here as-is.
Routines that use it
Headphones on, Discord follows
When Audio device changed reports your headphones connecting, set Discord's output to them using the device name the trigger passes along.
Speakers for a group call
A Hotkey moves Discord's output to the desk speakers so everyone in the room can hear, and Set volume brings the level up.
Hand control back to Windows
When the headset disconnects, set Discord's output to Default so it plays through whatever Windows uses next.
Good to know
- Only output devices that Discord itself lists can be picked, and the Discord desktop app has to be open and linked to KeyRoutines once.
Questions
- How do I make Discord switch to my headphones automatically?
- Use the Audio device changed trigger for the headphones with a Discord: output device step naming them. Free alternative: leave Discord's output on Default and switch Windows' default device with Set default audio device, because Discord follows it.
- Does changing Discord's output change other apps?
- No. Only Discord's own output setting changes. Windows and your other apps keep using their current device.
