How to open an app automatically when a device is connected

Add Device connected and Device disconnected triggers for the device to a KeyRoutines routine. Started by trigger picks the branch: Open app starts the device's app when it connects, and Close app closes it when the device goes away.

Steps

  1. 1

    Watch the device

Add Device connected and Device disconnected with part of the device's name, for example Wacom.

  2. 2

    Branch on the trigger

Add an If with Started by trigger set to Device connected.

  3. 3

    Open the app

In the If branch, add Open app for the device's app with If running set to reuse.

  4. 4

    Close it after

In the Else branch, add Close app for the same app.

Tips

  • Works for USB and Bluetooth devices; each physical device fires once, even if it has several parts.

Questions

What about headsets?
For audio devices, use Audio device changed instead; it can also switch the default device.
Does it work with game controllers?
It can open an app such as a launcher when the controller connects. KeyRoutines doesn't send controller input to games.
