How to rename many files at once on Windows

In KeyRoutines, use List files to collect the files, a Repeat over the list, and Rename file in each round, either replacing text in the name or writing a new name such as the old one plus a date. Run it from the tray with Run manually.

Steps

  1. 1

    Start it by hand

Add the Run manually trigger and show it in the tray if you'll use it often.

  2. 2

    Ask for the folder

Add Ask for input for the folder path, or put the path straight into the next step.

  3. 3

    List the files

Add List files with the folder and a pattern such as *.jpg.

  4. 4

    Rename each one

Add a Repeat over the List files result and, inside it, Rename file set to replace text, for example IMG_ with Holiday_.

Tips

  • Use Preview run first to see every new name before anything changes.
  • Rename file can add a number instead of overwriting when a name is already taken.

Questions

Is PowerToys PowerRename better for this?
For a one-off rename with a live preview, PowerRename is excellent. A routine helps when you rename the same way again and again, or after another step like a download.
Can it keep the extension?
Yes. Turn on Keep extension and the .jpg or .pdf stays when the new name has none.
