How to organize a messy folder by file type or date

Use KeyRoutines' Organize folder step on the folder and choose to sort by type, extension or date. Start it with a Hotkey trigger or the Every … trigger, and add your own rules such as .psd files to a Design folder.

Steps

  1. 1

    Choose a trigger

Add a Hotkey trigger to run it when you like, or Every … with 1 day to keep it tidy.

  2. 2

    Organize the folder

Add Organize folder, pick the folder and set By to type, extension or date.

  3. 3

    Pick the date format

For date, set the folder name format, such as yyyy-MM for a folder per month.

  4. 4

    Keep it in one place

Set Into to a folder such as Sorted, so new files arriving at the top level are easy to spot.

Tips

  • Your own rules (extensions to folder) are checked before the type or date sorting.
  • Try it once with Preview run to see what would move before anything does.

Questions

Can I undo it?
File moves are written to KeyRoutines' undo journal, so you can put them back.
Does it go into subfolders?
It sorts the files in the folder you pick. Use a pattern or an Older than filter to narrow what it moves.
