How to move new files out of a folder as soon as they appear

Use KeyRoutines' Folder changed trigger on the folder with Created turned on and a Settle time, then Format date and Move or copy file to put each new file in a folder like 2026-11. Settle waits until the file has stopped changing, so half-written files are never moved.

Steps

  1. 1

    Watch the folder

Add Folder changed with your folder, Created turned on and a pattern like *.png.

  2. 2

    Let files finish

Set Settle to 2 seconds so the trigger fires once the file has been quiet.

  3. 3

    Name the destination

Add Format date with the format yyyy-MM.

  4. 4

    Move it

Add Move or copy file with the new file as the source and a destination folder named with the date; turn on creating the folder.

Tips

  • Don't put the destination inside the watched folder with subfolders included, or the moved file starts the routine again.

Questions

Does it check the folder all the time?
It waits for Windows to report a change, so it uses almost no CPU while nothing happens.
Can I rename the file too?
Yes. Add Rename file before the move.
