How to reopen an app automatically when it closes or crashes

Use KeyRoutines' App quit trigger for the app, wait with Delay, check App is running so you don't start a second copy, then Open app to start it again. Show banner tells you it was restarted.

Steps

  1. 1

    Watch the app

Add the App quit trigger and pick the app.

  2. 2

    Wait a moment

Add a Delay of 10 seconds; many apps restart themselves after an update.

  3. 3

    Check it's really gone

Add an If with App is running and a Stop routine step inside it, in case it's already back.

  4. 4

    Start it again

Add Open app for the same app, then Show banner "Restarted".

Tips

  • The trigger fires when the app quits for any reason, including when you close it yourself. Add a Time and day condition, or turn the routine off with a hotkey, when you want it closed.

Questions

Can it tell a crash from a normal close?
Not directly. It sees that the app's process ended. The Delay and App is running check keep it from fighting an app's own restart.
Can it restart an app that's frozen but still open?
Restart app restarts a running app (asking it to close, then forcing after a wait). Start it from a hotkey when you see the app hang.
