How to switch to an app or open it with one hotkey

In KeyRoutines, use a Hotkey trigger and an If with App or window in front. If the app is already in front, Window state minimizes it; otherwise Open app with If running set to focus either opens it or brings its window to the front.

Steps

  1. 1

    Add a Hotkey trigger

Pick a chord for the app, for example Ctrl+Alt+1 for your terminal.

  2. 2

    Check if it's in front

Add an If with App or window in front for the app.

  3. 3

    Hide it if it is

In the If branch, add Window state set to minimize.

  4. 4

    Otherwise open or focus it

In the Else branch, add Open app with If running set to focus, so a running app comes to the front and a closed one starts.

Tips

  • Make one routine per app you switch to often and keep them in a folder.

Questions

Is this the same as Win+number on the taskbar?
Similar, but it works for apps that aren't pinned, and the same key hides the app again.
What if the app has several windows?
Focus brings its main window forward. Use Focus window with a title test if you need a particular one.
