How to save and restore your window layout with a hotkey

Build one KeyRoutines routine with two Hotkey triggers. The save key runs Remember layout and keeps the result with Remember; the restore key runs Restore layout from that remembered value, and Started by trigger chooses which half runs.

Steps

  1. 1

    Add two hotkeys

Add Hotkey triggers for save (for example Ctrl+Alt+S) and restore (Ctrl+Alt+R).

  2. 2

    Branch on the key

Add an If with Started by trigger set to the save hotkey.

  3. 3

    Save the layout

In the If branch, add Remember layout, then Remember with a name like savedLayout and the Remember layout step's layout as the value. Finish with Show banner "Layout saved".

  4. 4

    Restore it

In the Else branch, add Restore layout with From set to remembered and the layout set to the remembered savedLayout value.

Tips

  • Remember layout can be limited to some apps, so the restore leaves everything else alone.
  • For layouts you use every day, save them to the Layouts library and restore them by name instead.

Questions

Does it reopen closed apps?
No. Restore layout moves windows that are open. Add Open app steps before it if you want closed apps opened too.
Is the saved layout kept after a restart?
Yes. Values saved with Remember stay until you change them, so the layout survives restarts.
