How it works
- Choose the zip and, if you like, where to extract it; a short folder name stays inside the zip's own folder.
- For each file that already exists you choose what happens.
- Before writing anything it checks every entry, and refuses an archive that would put files outside the chosen folder.
- Newly extracted files and folders are recorded, so Undo file moves sends them to the Recycle Bin.
Routines that use it
Unpack downloads
When Download finished sees a .zip, unzip it next to itself, then Open file or folder shows the result.
Install a mod pack
Unzip a downloaded mod archive into a game's mods folder, then Show banner to say it's done.
Unzip and tidy
Extract an archive, then Delete to Recycle Bin removes the original zip.
Settings
| Setting | What it does |
|---|---|
| Zip | The zip file. |
| Destination | The folder to unzip into. Keep empty for a folder named after the zip, next to it. |
| If exists | When a file with the same name is already there. |
Good to know
- Very large archives, over 200,000 entries or 64 GB, are refused.
- Damaged zip files fail with a message rather than extracting partly.
Questions
- Can Windows unzip downloads automatically?
- With KeyRoutines, yes. Pair the Download finished trigger, filtered to *.zip, with Unzip file and every finished zip is extracted.
- Is it safe to unzip files from the internet this way?
- The step checks every entry first and refuses any archive that tries to write outside the target folder. It doesn't scan for viruses, so Windows Security still does that job.
