How it works
- Write the text, which can include values from the routine; new lines press Enter and tabs press Tab.
- Choose to type it character by character, or insert it all at once into a classic text box, replacing anything selected there.
- Auto delivery uses the method the delivery wizard saved for that app, or the one that suits how the app is built, including Chromium, Electron and Qt apps.
- Store apps may need a very brief flash to the front, after which your own window is put back.
- Text can be up to 50,000 characters and long text is sent in slices.
Routines that use it
Log a note in the background
A Hotkey sends the current time from Format date into a notes app that stays behind your browser.
Post a status in a desktop chat
When Idle reports you have been away for ten minutes, send 'Away from my desk' into a desktop chat app's message box that sits behind other windows.
Fill a form field
After Open app starts a desktop tool, Send text to app inserts a saved path into its classic text box.
Settings
| Setting | What it does |
|---|---|
| Text | The text to put into the app. New lines press Enter, tabs press Tab. |
| Target | The app to type into. It stays where it is: it doesn't need to be in front. |
| How | Type the characters one by one, or insert the whole text at once into a classic text box (replacing what is selected there). |
| Deliveryadvanced | How the text reaches the app. Auto uses what the delivery wizard found for it, or what suits how the app is built. |
Good to know
- Never types into a game protected by anti-cheat; background text is for desktop apps, and most games ignore it.
- Inserting all at once only works with classic text boxes that aren't read-only.
Questions
- Can I type into a window that's minimized or behind others?
- Behind others, yes: the app stays where it is and the text goes to the field it last had focus in. If an app doesn't accept that, try the delivery wizard's suggestion for it.
- Does it work with apps like Discord or Slack?
- Many Chromium and Electron apps are supported through a method that activates them inside their own input queue without bringing them forward. Results can vary per app, so test it once.
