Run a routine when you're away from the PC on Windows 11

Idle starts a routine after you've gone a set time without keyboard or mouse input. It's the trigger for "I've stepped away": lock, pause, save, or tidy.

How it works

  • Set how long without input counts, from one minute up.
  • It fires once per idle period, not over and over while you stay away.
  • By default it doesn't count time while a full-screen app such as a game or video is in front, since a gamepad or watching leaves no keyboard or mouse input; you can turn that off in advanced settings.
  • Input that KeyRoutines itself sends doesn't count as you being active.

Routines that use it

Auto lock

After 5 minutes idle, Lock the PC and Mute or unmute mutes the microphone.

Pause when away

After 3 minutes idle, Media control pauses your podcast so you don't miss anything.

Night sleep

After 30 minutes idle, Sleep with a one-minute countdown.

Questions

How do I run something when my computer is idle?
Create a routine with the Idle trigger and set the time. It runs once each time you've been away that long.
Will it fire while I'm watching a movie or playing with a controller?
Not by default. Time with a full-screen app in front doesn't count, because watching or a gamepad leaves no keyboard or mouse input.
