Play, pause or skip music automatically on Windows 11

Media control sends play, pause, next, previous or stop to whatever is playing, or to a player you name. People use it to pause music for calls, resume it after games, and give keyboards without media keys a set of their own.

How it works

  • Choose the action: play/pause, play, pause, next, previous or stop.
  • Leave the player empty for whatever Windows shows as playing, or name one, such as Spotify, so a browser tab doesn't get the command instead.
  • The command goes through Windows' media controls rather than pressing media keys, so it isn't keyboard input and works the same while a game is in front.
  • After the command, the step reports the track title, artist and whether it is playing; right after a skip, some players briefly still show the old track.

Routines that use it

Pause for calls

When Mic or camera in use fires, Media control pauses Spotify; when the call ends, it plays again.

Media keys for any keyboard

Three Hotkey routines give you play/pause, next and previous on keys of your choice.

Music after gaming

When Game stopped fires, switch back to the speakers and press play in your music player.

Good to know

  • A player you name must be open, and a player can refuse a command it doesn't offer, such as next on a single video.

Questions

How can I pause Spotify automatically when a call starts?
Use the Mic or camera in use trigger with Media control set to pause and the player set to Spotify. A second step can press play again when the mic is free.
Does it work while I'm in a game?
Yes. It talks to Windows' media controls instead of pressing keys, so it isn't blocked by game-safe mode.
