Switch keyboard layout or input language automatically

Switch keyboard layout changes the active input language to a layout you name, as the language switcher on the taskbar does. Multilingual users run it when they open a specific app, so they start typing in the right language.

How it works

  • Type the layout as Windows shows it, such as English, en-US or Arabic (101); a part of a name works too.
  • If nothing installed matches, the step fails and lists the layouts you do have.
  • It switches for the window in front, and the change is checked for up to a second.
  • It outputs the previous layout, so a later step can switch back exactly.
  • When a protected game is in front, the request goes through the taskbar instead, so the game's window is never sent anything.

Routines that use it

Language per app

When App focused fires for your chat app, switch to Arabic; when your code editor comes to the front, switch to English.

Back to English for gaming

On Game started, switch to English so in-game keys match what you expect.

Typing a reply

Switch keyboard layout to English, then Type text a short reply, then switch back to the previous layout.

Good to know

  • Only layouts already installed in Windows can be chosen.

Questions

How do I change the keyboard language automatically for one app?
Use the App focused trigger for that app and a Switch keyboard layout step. Each time the app comes to the front, Windows switches to that layout.
Can I switch back to the layout I had before?
Yes. The step outputs the layout it replaced, and a later Switch keyboard layout step can use it to switch back exactly.
