Hibernate your PC automatically with a Windows 11 routine

Hibernate saves everything to disk and powers the PC down, so it uses no power but comes back with your apps where you left them. People put it at the end of an evening routine or after a long download.

How it works

  • A notification counts down first, 60 seconds by default and up to 10 minutes, with a Cancel button; set it to 0 to hibernate at once.
  • Pressing Cancel stops it and the step still succeeds, reporting that it was cancelled, so the routine can do something else instead.
  • If hibernation is turned off on this PC, the step fails before any countdown and tells you where to turn it on.

Routines that use it

Hibernate after the download

When Download finished fires late at night, Hibernate counts down for two minutes so you can still stop it.

Laptop battery rescue

When Battery low fires at 10%, Hibernate saves your work before the battery runs out.

Good night key

A hotkey closes your apps with Close app and hibernates, ready to resume tomorrow.

Settings

SettingWhat it does
CountdownHow long the notification counts down before it happens (0 = at once). Cancel on the notification stops it.

Good to know

  • Hibernation must be enabled in Windows' power options.

Questions

Why is hibernate not available on my PC?
Windows can have hibernation turned off. Enable it in Control Panel, Power Options, "Choose what the power buttons do", and the step will work.
What's the difference between sleep and hibernate?
Sleep keeps your session in memory and wakes quickly but still uses a little power. Hibernate saves it to disk and powers off completely.
