How to change resolution automatically for one app

With KeyRoutines Pro, add App launched and App quit triggers for the app and a Set display mode step in each branch of an If on Started by trigger. The monitor switches to the resolution and refresh rate you pick when the app opens, and back when it closes.

KeyRoutines Pro is a one-time $29.99 upgrade for up to 2 PCs.

Steps

  1. 1

    Watch the app

Add App launched and App quit triggers for the app that needs the other resolution.

  2. 2

    Branch on the trigger

Add an If with Started by trigger set to App launched.

  3. 3

    Switch the mode

In the If branch, add Set display mode with the monitor, the resolution (for example 1920 × 1080) and the refresh rate.

  4. 4

    Switch it back

In the Else branch, add Set display mode with your usual resolution and refresh set to highest.

Tips

  • Set display mode checks the mode against the ones your monitor offers before asking Windows, so a typo fails safely instead of blanking the screen.
  • Pick the monitor by name; KeyRoutines remembers it by a stable id, not Windows' number.

Questions

Does it work for games?
Yes for changing the Windows display mode before and after a game. It changes a Windows setting; nothing is sent to the game.
Is this free?
The triggers are free, but Set display mode is part of KeyRoutines Pro.
