How to lower your laptop's refresh rate on battery automatically

With KeyRoutines Pro, add the Plugged in or unplugged trigger set to either, and an If with Plugged in or on battery. On battery, Set display mode sets the built-in screen to 60 Hz; plugged in, it chooses the highest refresh rate the resolution offers.

KeyRoutines Pro is a one-time $29.99 upgrade for up to 2 PCs.

Steps

  1. 1

    React to the charger

Add Plugged in or unplugged, set to either.

  2. 2

    Check the power source

Add an If with Plugged in or on battery set to on battery.

  3. 3

    Save power

In the If branch, add Set display mode for the built-in screen, keep the resolution and set 60 Hz.

  4. 4

    Full speed on the charger

In the Else branch, add Set display mode with the highest refresh rate.

Tips

  • Runs started by a trigger don't show "Keep these display settings?", so the switch is silent.
  • Only modes the screen reports to Windows can be picked; the step lists them if you ask for one it doesn't offer.

Questions

Can it also change the power mode?
Yes. Add Set power mode for best power efficiency on battery; that step is free.
Do I need Pro?
