How to make a text expander with fill-in fields on Windows
With KeyRoutines Pro, use the Typed text trigger with an empty replacement so it only starts the routine. Press keys removes the abbreviation, Ask for input asks for the customer's name, and Type text writes your reply with that name filled in.
KeyRoutines Pro is a one-time $29.99 upgrade for up to 2 PCs.
Steps
- 1
Add a Typed text trigger
Set an abbreviation such as ;thx and leave the replacement empty, so it runs the routine instead of replacing text.
- 2
Remove the abbreviation
Add Press keys with Backspace once per character of the abbreviation.
- 3
Ask for the blank
Add Ask for input with "Customer name?".
- 4
Type the reply
Add Type text with your template and the answer from Ask for input where the name goes; choose paste for long text.
Tips
- For snippets without blanks, put the text straight into the trigger's replacement; it follows your capitals too.
- Ask for input can hold several lines if a blank needs more than a name.
Questions
- Does it work in every app?
- In most desktop apps and browsers. It's paused in password fields and while a protected game is running, and apps running as administrator can't receive typed text.
- Do I need Pro?
- Yes. The Typed text trigger is part of KeyRoutines Pro. A free alternative is a Hotkey trigger with the same steps.
