How to create today's daily note with a hotkey

Make a KeyRoutines routine with a Hotkey trigger and Format date for today. Write text file in "create only when missing" mode makes the note from your template the first time, and Open file or folder opens it in your editor.

Steps

  1. 1

    Add a Hotkey trigger

Pick a chord such as Ctrl+Alt+N.

  2. 2

    Build the file name

Add Format date with the layout yyyy-MM-dd.

  3. 3

    Create it only once

Add Write text file with a path like Documents\Notes\ followed by the date and .md, the mode set to create only when missing, and your template text with headings such as Yesterday, Today, Blockers.

  4. 4

    Open it

Add Open file or folder with the same path.

Tips

  • Because the mode is "create only when missing", pressing the key again never overwrites what you wrote.
  • Put the date in the template too, with Format date's dddd for the weekday.

Questions

Can it open in Obsidian or Notepad?
Yes. Open file or folder can use the file's usual app or an app you pick.
Is it free?
Yes. Hotkey, Format date, Write text file and Open file or folder are free.
