How to launch Steam and Discord with one hotkey on Windows

Make a KeyRoutines routine with a Hotkey trigger and two Open app steps, one for Steam and one for Discord, each set to reuse a copy that's already open. A Wait until with App is ready holds until Discord has finished loading, Move and resize puts it on your second monitor, and Show banner tells you you're set.

Steps

  1. 1

    Add a Hotkey trigger

Pick a chord such as Ctrl+Alt+S. The keys are kept from the app in front, so they don't type anything.

  2. 2

    Open Steam and Discord

Add Open app for Steam and another for Discord. Set "If it's already open" to bring it to the front or leave it alone, so a second press never opens a second copy.

  3. 3

Wait for Discord to finish loading

Add a Wait until with App is ready for Discord. It waits past the update and splash windows until Discord's real window is up and responding.

  4. 4

Put Discord where you want it

Add Move and resize for Discord's window and choose your second monitor, full screen or the right half.

  5. 5

Add an extra launcher when you hold Shift

Optionally add an If with Key or button held set to Shift and an Open app for the Epic Games Launcher inside it. Hold Shift with the hotkey on the days you need it.

Tips

  • Open app can also start a single game from your library; KeyRoutines waits for the real game process rather than the launcher's.
  • Add Open URLs at the end if you always check the same patch notes or a wiki page.

Questions

Is this free?
Yes. Hotkey, Open app, App is ready, Move and resize, Key or button held and Show banner are all in the free version of KeyRoutines.
Does KeyRoutines press anything inside Steam or my games?
No. It opens the apps and arranges their windows; it never sends keys or clicks into games.
