How to switch to High performance automatically when gaming

Add Game started and Game stopped triggers to a KeyRoutines routine and a Set power plan step in each branch of an If on Started by trigger. The PC uses High performance (or Ultimate performance) while a game runs and Balanced the rest of the time.

Steps

  1. 1

    Watch your games

Add Game started and Game stopped triggers, for any game or the ones you pick.

  2. 2

    Branch on the trigger

Add an If with Started by trigger set to Game started.

  3. 3

    Speed up

Add Set power plan with High performance in the If branch.

  4. 4

    Back to normal

Add Set power plan with Balanced in the Else branch.

Tips

  • Many Windows 11 PCs only offer Balanced. Then use Set power mode with Best performance instead; Windows applies power mode while the Balanced plan is active.
  • On a laptop, add a Plugged in or on battery check so it doesn't drain the battery.

Questions

Does a power plan make games faster?
It can help on some PCs by keeping the CPU at higher clocks, mostly on desktops and plugged-in laptops. Many modern PCs see little difference.
Is it free?
Yes. These triggers and Set power plan are all free.
