How to schedule a shutdown with a countdown you can cancel
Use KeyRoutines' At a time trigger with an Ask Yes or No step whose default answer is Yes, so it goes ahead if you're away. Then Shut down runs with a countdown notification you can cancel.
Steps
- 1
Pick the time
Add At a time, for example 23:30 every day.
- 2
Skip if you're busy
Add an If with Idle for set to 10 minutes; when it isn't true, a Stop routine step ends the run, so it only goes ahead when nobody is using the PC.
- 3
Ask first
Add Ask Yes or No, "Shut down now?", with the default Yes after a minute without an answer.
- 4
Shut down
Add Shut down with a 60-second countdown; Cancel on the notification stops it.
Tips
- Swap Shut down for Sleep or Hibernate if you'd rather resume where you left off.
Questions
- Why not use shutdown /s /t in Task Scheduler?
- That works, but it doesn't check whether you're still using the PC and gives you no easy way to cancel. The routine does both.
- Will apps with unsaved work stop it?
- Windows handles that the usual way when it shuts down; save your work first or use Sleep.
