How to get an alert when an app starts using your mic or camera

Use KeyRoutines' Mic or camera in use trigger with no app chosen, so it fires for any app. Show banner names the app and device, and Add text to file with Format date keeps a log you can check later.

Steps

  1. 1

    Watch the devices

Add Mic or camera in use with the device set to either and On set to started.

  2. 2

    Show who

Add Show banner with the app's name and the device from the trigger.

  3. 3

    Keep a log

Add Format date with yyyy-MM-dd HH:mm, then Add text to file with the date, the app and the device.

Tips

  • Mic or camera in use is marked Experimental: it reads Windows' own record of which app uses the device.
  • Windows also shows a mic or camera icon in the taskbar; the routine adds a log and a clearer alert.

Questions

Can it block the app?
No. KeyRoutines tells you and can run other steps, but blocking is done in Windows' privacy settings.
Does it record anything?
No. It only notes that an app started using the device.
