How to show the current Spotify song on your stream in OBS

Use KeyRoutines' Window title changed trigger on Spotify's window, then Get now playing for the title and artist, and Write text file to save them to a .txt file. In OBS, a Text source set to read from that file shows the song on stream.

Steps

  1. 1

    Watch Spotify's title

Add Window title changed and describe Spotify's window by its app. Spotify puts the current song in its title.

  2. 2

    Read the song

Add Get now playing with the player set to Spotify.

  3. 3

    Write it to a file

Add Write text file in replace mode with a path such as Documents\Stream\nowplaying.txt and the text: artist, a dash, title.

  4. 4

    Show it in OBS

In OBS, add a Text source, turn on Read from file and pick the same file.

Tips

  • Write text file only shows the new text once it's fully written, so OBS never reads half a line.
  • For other players, use the same idea with any app that shows the song in Windows' media controls.

Questions

What if Spotify is paused?
Get now playing still reports the last track, and its outputs say whether it's playing, so an If can write "Paused" instead.
Is it free?
Yes. Window title changed, Get now playing and Write text file are free.
