How to start streaming in OBS with one hotkey

KeyRoutines' free Stream Start template does it: a Hotkey trigger, Open app for OBS, a Wait until with OBS is connected, OBS: switch scene to your starting scene, OBS: record / stream / replay to start streaming, then Open app for Discord and a Show banner that says you're live.

Steps

  1. 1

    Turn on OBS's WebSocket server

In OBS, open Tools, WebSocket Server Settings and turn the server on. KeyRoutines reads its port and password from OBS by itself.

  2. 2

    Open OBS and wait

Open app starts OBS (or reuses it), and Wait until with OBS is connected holds until KeyRoutines can talk to it.

  3. 3

    Pick the starting scene

OBS: switch scene shows your "Starting soon" scene. It retries a few times while OBS finishes loading.

  4. 4

    Go live

OBS: record / stream / replay starts the stream.

  5. 5

    Open chat and confirm

Open app starts Discord, and Show banner says "You're live".

Tips

  • Add Ask Yes or No first if you're worried about going live by accident.
  • OBS has its own start-streaming hotkey; the routine is useful because it also opens OBS, picks the scene and opens your other apps.

Questions

Does it work with Streamlabs Desktop?
The OBS steps talk to OBS Studio. The template is built for OBS Studio 28 or later, which has the WebSocket server built in.
Is it free?
Yes. Opening apps, switching OBS scenes and starting or stopping the stream are all free.
