Read the clipboard's text, files or image in a routine

Get clipboard reads what is on the clipboard so later steps can use it. Choose text, copied files, or an image, which is saved as a PNG file you name.

How it works

  • Pick what to read: the text, the copied files, or the image.
  • For an image, give a full path ending in .png and the picture is saved there.
  • If the clipboard holds nothing of that kind, the outputs are simply empty, or the step can fail instead if you prefer.
  • Your clipboard text is kept private: run history and logs show only its length, never the words.
  • Very long text is cut off after one million characters, and the step tells you it did.

Routines that use it

Search what you copied

A Hotkey runs Get clipboard, then Web search looks up the copied words on your favourite engine.

Save copied images

Get clipboard saves a copied picture to a dated PNG in your Pictures folder using Format date for the name.

Clean up copied text

Read the clipboard, run Trim text and Change case, then put the result back with Set clipboard.

Good to know

  • Images are saved as PNG only.

Questions

Can a routine use the text I just copied?
Yes. Get clipboard puts the copied text in the step's outputs, and any later step can use it. You can also use the clipboard value directly in most text fields.
Does KeyRoutines keep a history of my clipboard?
No. When a routine reads clipboard text, the run history shows only how long it was, so copied passwords or messages don't end up in logs.
