How to paste as plain text with a hotkey in any app
Make a KeyRoutines routine with a Hotkey trigger, Get clipboard as text, Set clipboard with that text (which drops the formatting), and Press keys with Ctrl+V. The app you're in receives only plain text.
Steps
- 1
Add a Hotkey trigger
Pick a chord such as Ctrl+Alt+V.
- 2
Read the text
Add Get clipboard set to read the text.
- 3
Put back plain text
Add Set clipboard with the text from Get clipboard; only the plain text goes back.
- 4
Paste
Add Press keys with Ctrl+V. It waits for you to let go of Ctrl and Alt first.
Tips
- PowerToys' Advanced Paste and many apps' own Ctrl+Shift+V do this too; this routine works the same way in every app.
- Add Trim text before Set clipboard to drop stray spaces and line breaks.
Questions
- Does it keep my original formatted copy?
- No, the clipboard keeps the plain version afterwards. Use Type text with paste instead of Press keys if you want the original put back.
- Does it work in games?
- No. KeyRoutines never types into games.
