How to switch between gaming, work and streaming modes with one key

With KeyRoutines Pro, build Gaming, Work and Streaming as Modes in the same set, each with steps such as Set default audio device, Set power plan and Apply layout. A small routine with a Hotkey trigger, Choose from a list and Turn mode on switches between them; turning one on turns the others off and restores their changes first.

KeyRoutines Pro is a one-time $29.99 upgrade for up to 2 PCs.

Steps

  1. 1

    Build each mode

Make a routine per mode with a When it turns on section, for example Set default audio device, Set power plan and Apply layout.

  2. 2

    Put them in one set

Give all three modes the same set name, so only one can be on at a time.

  3. 3

    Make the switcher

In a new routine, add a Hotkey trigger and Choose from a list with Gaming, Work and Streaming.

  4. 4

    Turn the chosen mode on

Add an If on the chosen item for each mode with Turn mode on, and end with Show banner naming the mode.

Tips

  • A mode only puts back what it actually changed, and it never closes apps it opened, so you don't lose work.
  • Mode state is kept on disk, so a mode that was on before a restart is still on afterwards.

Questions

Can each mode also have its own hotkey?
Yes. A mode's own Hotkey trigger toggles it on and off.
Do I need Pro?
Yes. Modes and the mode steps are KeyRoutines Pro.

Blocks this routine uses

Trigger · HotkeysFree

Hotkey

Hotkey starts a routine when you press a keyboard shortcut or mouse button. It's the most common way to run a routine, from a single app launcher key to a whole streaming setup on one combination.

Step · NotificationsFree

Choose from a list

Choose from a list shows a question with a list of answers and waits for you to pick one. It lets one routine cover several variations, such as different projects, games or layouts.

Step · ModesPro

Turn mode on

Turn mode on switches on one of your modes, such as Gaming mode or Work mode, from inside another routine. The mode remembers what it changes so it can put things back later. Modes need KeyRoutines Pro.

Step · AudioFree

Set default audio device

Set default audio device makes a playback or recording device the one Windows uses. People run it to move sound to a headset when gaming or a call starts, and back to speakers afterwards.

Step · SystemFree

Set power plan

Set power plan switches the classic Windows power plan, such as Balanced, High performance, Power saver or Ultimate performance. Gaming routines usually switch to High performance and back to Balanced afterwards.

Step · WindowsFree

Apply layout

Apply layout puts several windows on their monitors in one step, and can open apps that aren't running yet. It's the step behind "one key and my whole workspace is set up".

Step · NotificationsFree

Show banner

Show banner puts a large text message on screen for a set time. Unlike a Windows notification, it still shows when a borderless full-screen app is in front, and it never takes the mouse or keyboard.
