How to turn on HDR automatically only for HDR games

With KeyRoutines Pro, add Game started and Game stopped triggers for the games that support HDR, and an If on Started by trigger. One branch runs HDR on/off set to on, the other sets it to off, so the desktop stays in SDR the rest of the time.

KeyRoutines Pro is a one-time $29.99 upgrade for up to 2 PCs.

Steps

  1. 1

    Pick your HDR games

Add a Game started trigger and choose a game; add one trigger per HDR game, or one per game you care about.

  2. 2

    Add the matching stop triggers

Add Game stopped for the same games. It waits until the game's last process has exited.

  3. 3

Branch on how the run started

Add an If with Started by trigger and pick the Game started triggers.

  4. 4

    Switch HDR

In the If branch, add HDR on/off set to on for your gaming monitor. In the Else branch, add HDR on/off set to off.

Tips

  • HDR on/off reads the state back after switching, so if a driver accepts the request and does nothing, the run history tells you.
  • Leave the monitor empty to use the main monitor.

Questions

Do I need Pro?
Yes. HDR on/off is a KeyRoutines Pro step; the Game started and Game stopped triggers are free.
What if my monitor doesn't support HDR?
The step fails and points you to Settings, Display, HDR. The monitor, cable and graphics driver all need to support it.
