How to open your work apps the first time you unlock your PC each day

Build a KeyRoutines routine with PC unlocked and When KeyRoutines starts triggers. Format date gives today's date, and an If with Compare values checks it against the date the routine last ran; if it's new, Remember saves today, then Open app, Open URLs and Apply layout set up your day.

Steps

  1. 1

    Add the triggers

Add PC unlocked and When KeyRoutines starts, so a fresh sign-in counts as well as an unlock.

  2. 2

    Get today's date

Add Format date with the layout yyyy-MM-dd.

  3. 3

    Stop if it already ran

Add an If with Compare values: the remembered last_setup value equals today's date. Inside it, add Stop routine.

  4. 4

    Remember today

Add Remember with last_setup set to today's date.

  5. 5

    Open and arrange

Add Open app for each work app, Open URLs for your dashboards, and Apply layout to put them on your monitors.

Tips

  • Add Time and day to the If if you only want it on weekday mornings.
  • Remembered values survive restarts, so the check works across reboots.

Questions

Why not just use a time trigger?
A time trigger runs at 09:00 whether you're there or not. This waits for you to actually sit down and unlock.
Is it free?
Yes. Every block in this routine is free.

Blocks this routine uses

Trigger · SystemFree

PC unlocked

PC unlocked starts a routine when you unlock the PC. It's the natural place for "I'm back" steps such as resuming music, restoring settings or opening the day's apps.

Trigger · Flow and routinesFree

When KeyRoutines starts

When KeyRoutines starts runs a routine as the app starts up. KeyRoutines starts when you sign in to Windows, so this is the trigger for anything you want ready every time you log on.

Step · Data and variablesFree

Format date

Format date writes a date as text in the layout you choose. It's the step behind dated file names, readable times in messages and timestamps in log files.

Condition · Flow and routinesFree

Compare values

Compare values is the everyday yes-or-no check in KeyRoutines. You put a value on the left, pick a test, and put a value on the right, so an If can branch on things like a battery level, a window title or a number an earlier step worked out.

Step · Flow and routinesFree

Stop routine

Stop routine ends the current run right there. You choose how it should be recorded and can add a short message, which makes the run history easy to read later.

Step · Flow and routinesFree

Remember

Remember keeps a value safe after the routine ends, even across restarts of KeyRoutines and the PC. Use it for things like the last volume you set, a folder you picked, or whether you're away.

Step · AppsFree

Open app

Open app starts a program, a Store app, a shortcut or a game from your library. It is the first step of most setup routines, from a morning work session to a full streaming setup.

Step · BrowserFree

Open URLs

Open URLs opens one or more web pages in your default browser, or in a chosen browser and profile. It is the quickest way to bring up the same set of pages every time, such as your work dashboards or a game's guides.

Step · WindowsFree

Apply layout

Apply layout puts several windows on their monitors in one step, and can open apps that aren't running yet. It's the step behind "one key and my whole workspace is set up".
