How to start the OBS virtual camera when Zoom or Teams opens

Create a KeyRoutines routine with App launched and App quit triggers for Zoom or Teams. On launch, Open app opens OBS, a Wait until with OBS is connected waits for it, OBS: switch scene picks your call scene and OBS: record / stream / replay starts the virtual camera; on quit, it stops it.

Steps

  1. 1

    Watch the call app

Add App launched and App quit for Zoom, Teams or both.

  2. 2

    Branch

Add an If with Started by trigger set to App launched.

  3. 3

    Open OBS and wait

In the If branch, add Open app for OBS, minimized if you like, and a Wait until with OBS is connected.

  4. 4

    Start the virtual camera

Add OBS: switch scene with your call scene, then OBS: record / stream / replay set to start the virtual camera.

  5. 5

    Stop after the call

In the Else branch, add OBS: record / stream / replay set to stop the virtual camera.

Tips

  • Pick OBS Virtual Camera as the camera in Zoom or Teams once; after that it's there whenever the routine starts it.
  • App quit fires when the app's last process ends, so closing one Teams window doesn't stop the camera.

Blocks this routine uses

Trigger · AppsFree

App launched

App launched starts a routine when a chosen app or game opens. It's ideal when you start apps your usual way and want the rest of the setup to follow on its own.

Trigger · AppsFree

App quit

App quit starts a routine when a chosen app or game has fully closed. It's the natural partner of App launched for putting things back the way they were.

Condition · Flow and routinesFree

Started by trigger

Started by trigger checks which of a routine's own triggers began this run. That lets one routine react a little differently to a hotkey, a schedule or an app opening without keeping separate copies.

Step · AppsFree

Open app

Open app starts a program, a Store app, a shortcut or a game from your library. It is the first step of most setup routines, from a morning work session to a full streaming setup.

Condition · OBS StudioFree

OBS is connected

OBS is connected is a condition that is true when KeyRoutines can talk to OBS Studio. Its most common job is sitting right after Open app OBS, holding the routine until OBS is ready to take commands.

Step · OBS StudioFree

OBS: switch scene

OBS: switch scene changes the scene OBS shows to viewers. It's free and needs no setup beyond turning on OBS's WebSocket server.

Step · OBS StudioFree

OBS: record / stream / replay

OBS: record / stream / replay controls OBS's outputs from a routine: recording, the live stream, the replay buffer and the virtual camera. Gaming routines often use it to start the replay buffer when a game launches.
